Honors Mentorship Program
My career plans are changing constantly as I gain more information, hear about other’s experiences in their careers, and I end up with a better guide of where I want my life to go. Discussions like the Global Challenges one, open up new possibilities that I had not previously thought of or give me another perspective at something that I have thought a lot about. I do not necessarily want to go into health and health care, even though it interests me, because there are so many other areas that I want to be a part of in addition to health and health care. There are many other aspects of life and society that need to change to have the most impact. The world is full of people that want to take action but lack support, resources, or the privilege to do so. Everyone sees the things in front of them that need to change; let’s make those changes, let’s live in a better world. The Global Challenges event shows us an example of people that are working towards a world that gives a higher value for the living and non-living things in it. This inspires me; it makes me want to learn more about the world so when I do take action it is coming from an educated and well thought out place.
I see myself doing a myriad of things in my professional career. My interests are so varied that it would be hard to narrow them down to one that I’d like to focus on, and if I have the opportunity to be involved in a wider variety of activities, jobs, and positions, then there is no reason not to. The Global Challenges event and others like it do not help to narrow down my list of areas of interest, but only add to them, something that I welcome wholeheartedly. One of the speakers during the presentation mentioned how it was a privilege to be at the event, to be at this university, to be a part of the activities and groups that we participate in. I think that I have to the ability, desire, and time, to go and listen to people talk for the sake of learning. The freedom to be able to learn is one of the most precious things that I have and I want to do something with that.
